Finally got this up and running. Will hopefully be updated as I finish it/come up with more to add to it.

Project Master List: Fic, OrigiFic, ArtCollapse )

If there's anything you'd like to see me attempt that isn't already on this list (or that you don't think is already on this list), you can fill out a request either on this post or over here. It says it's for a writing meme, but go ahead and make art requests there too, for now.

As a note: all of my fanfiction should be open to the public. If you happen to click on a fanfic link and it leads you to a f'locked post, do let me know.

(My original fiction, on the other hand, has been deliberately f'locked, as is all of my art.)

Welp. So this is my reaction post to Star Trek XII.

Please note that I came at this movie with intense reservations. I've been a fan of this series since I was very small, and given what I knew about the villain in this film, his actor, and the possible plot points Into Darkness might follow, I had VERY intense reservations. Those definitely reflect in my opinion of the film.

Spoilers to follow.

I don't get mad over my fiction very often. (Okay, that's a lie.) I usually get angry about what I feel is pretty valid stuff. But twice (!!) already this week I've been presented with little details about upcoming Things I Care About (or Kinda Care About) that are making the nerd in me rage - and rage hard.

First: Star Trek.

potential spoilers for rumors surrounding Into DarknessCollapse )

Second, the first trailer for Ender's Game was finally released. While I have no intention of seeing this film any time soon (Orson Scott Card is not getting ANY financial support from me in the foreseeable future and possibly beyond that), I do still have fond memories of the first time I read the book and am vaguely curious about its translation to film, so I clicked on the trailer.

Yesterday was the 46th Anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire.

Today is the 27th Anniversary of the Challenger explosion.

This Friday marks the 10th Anniversary of the Colombia tragedy.

I think it's safe to say that this is not a happy week for NASA.

But all is not lost, I feel. Every year around this time I tend to sit back and marvel at just how far we've come. In just over 60 years we went from our first manned flight with heavier-than-air craft to putting men on the moon. For humanity that was - literally - a giant leap. And though we have retired our space shuttles and reduced NASA's funding, since these tragedies we have put rovers on Mars - two of which even continued to function and return data long after their expected lifespans. We are discovering exoplanets at an astonishing rate. Private companies have successfully launched what may be the precursors to a whole new generation of space shuttles. We watched a man fall to earth from the very edge of space - successfully!

Though we have not returned to the moon in decades, we are not done exploring the stars. No, we are not done. And it is in part because the brave, bold, fiery spirits that inhabited all those astronauts are still here, still burning.

I salute our astronauts. I salute the brave men and women who are willing to put their lives at risk for the advancement of our species as a whole. The future is out there, and my opinion has always been that astronauts - people like Gus Grissom, Ed White, Roger Chaffee, Michael Smith, Dick Scobee, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Christa McAuliffe, Gregory Jarvis, and Judith Resnik - will be the people who push us towards it.

It is my hope that we will go back to the moon someday, and then go on to Mars and the solar system and the stars beyond our own.

And we will go there because our astronauts will make it so.

Still alive. Still here. Still primarily (and most obviously) active on Tumblr.

Not that I don't love you guys! But I have developed an even more hectic social life than I once had, it's the holidays now, and work has picked up quite a bit since we now have end-of-year deadlines to meet for things. My normal updating spaces and times are being rapidly filled in, and now all I'm left with is tiny gaps here and there.

Also, I can't help but feel like I just don't have a lot to say right now. I could blather on about writing, I suppose, since that's still a thing I'm trying to do in between work and socializing, but I haven't been doing tons on that front either. I could...talk about Resident Evil s'more, but I have a feeling that'd get old for people really fast. XD Most of my other fandoms are on hiatus periods or just released stuff, so it's time to dig in and wait for the next installments to pop on out.

In any event, am going to try to make a better effort to post and comment and be more generally active around here. There's bound to be something in my life worth mentioning. And maybe blogging more will help with the writing issues I am currently having. Words are words are words when you're as desperate as I am. :D

Okay, LJ, I see what you're doing.

But I think we can compromise. Give me the option to customize the colors and at least some parts of the layout on my new, infinite scrolling friends page (I'll grant that the new layout isn't the eyesore I expected it to be. Good job on that one, at least) and I think I can (grudgingly) accept the infinite scroll. Most everyone I know is abandoning ship as it is, so I don't have many blogs left to scroll through to begin with.(Take that, I suppose.)

But, really, I'm disappointed. You used to be relatively unique and original, LJ. You used to actually be a site I wanted to spend time on. Now I'm here only because so much of my life is recorded here and because I have a few friends who cling to this site and haven't yet migrated. Otherwise, I'd be done with you.

Stop emulating other sites. This isn't Tumblr. I like that it isn't Tumblr.

AH.

AHHHHHHH.

Played through all of the first chapter on Tuesday and most of the second chapter yesterday, so I'm going to break it down by chapter.

As an additional note I AM FINALLY NOT CO-OPING WITH THE AI ALONE. I HAVE A PARTNER. IT IS FANTASTIC. We started with the Leon/Helena campaign, and I'm Helena. (This seems to suit; I'm not an aggressive player [because that tends to get me killed] and Helena seems to lack the melee weapons Leon usually comes equipped with. Means I just have to extra-careful with my ammo, though.)

SO. GAME.

cut for spoilers! And ramblings!Collapse )

MY APOLOGIES for the lack of cohesion. I play with my jaw halfway to my lap most of the time, and so much happens it's hard to fit it all in.

GREETINGS FRIENDS.

Perhaps I'll actually try to post at least once a week this month. D: I'm still terribly sorry for the on again, off again posting presence - it's not that I don't love you, it's that I feel like I have very little to say.

In fact, I'm only hopping on right now because RESIDENT EVIL 6 COMES OUT TOMORROW AND I AM SO BLOODY EXCITED. I will probably be mostly absent again (except maybe for flaily posts and feels, because I FULLY EXPECT THERE TO BE AT LEAST A FEW) because I'm going to be playing that a lot (and because my birthday is coming up and NaNo is just after that, so this might be the last chance I get to chill in relative isolation before WRITING AND HOLIDAYS AND NECESSARY SOCIALIZING), but after that I fully plan to actually be an active member of the Dreamwidth/LJ community again.

Mostly I've been writing - or plotting, rather, and trying to write when I'm not doing that. It's not been terribly easy. I apparently do my best stuff during the day, when I'm at work....which is when I'm supposed to be doing work, not plotting. :/ Thankfully it doesn't take a lot of time to scribble down a note between projects, and I do get a bit of downtime during the day I can take advantage of. Hopefully I'll be able to post some mini-exerpts soon, 'cause I'm actually pretty confident in this idea and its potential. For once. :D

Okay so I was browing io9 today and I saw this and then I scrolled down to the bottom to the awesome Portal-themed office and naturally my brain decided HOW DO I ONE-UP THIS AMAZING PAINT JOB

The answer, obviously: theme an entire room to look like a test chamber.

Cut for musings and brainstorming and PERHAPS I WILL JUST BUY A HOUSE SO I CAN DO THISCollapse )

Clearly there needs to be a geek-oriented room makeover show, like Room Crashers for Geeks. BECAUSE AWESOME.

And for my next trick I will do this same thing for Mass Effect because, uhm. Yes. Shepard's quarters on the Normandy would be super simple for a master bedroom, I mean come on.)

Sorry for the post spam, f'list, but I need to do this or else I'll forget and I LOVE THIS IDEA:

GingerDead Cookie Cutters

YOU COULD MAKE A BROWNIE GRAVEYARD AND HAVE ZOMBIE GINGERBREAD MEN MARCHING OUT OF IT

YOU COULD USE RED GEL FROSTING FOR BLOOD

YOU COULD USE GREEN ICING FOR THE BONES AND TINT THE GINGERBREAD BLUE AND HAVE RADIOACTIVE ZOMBIES EVERYWHERE

Not much to report here, sorry to say. Last week was a nightmare of unending stress and right now I'm just hoping that the stress does not carry over (and given that my phone has just decided to go all wonky, I am not currently optimistic about that).

I've been mourning Neil Armstrong right along with the rest of the scientific, space-oriented community since yesterday. I...really don't have words for my sad, other than I have it. I never really entertained the idea of becoming an astronaut - the math and science skills required were a bit beyond my comfort zones, to say nothing of my complete inability to handle spaceflight (I can't even do roller coasters, how am I supposed to survive SPACEFLIGHT) but Neil Armstrong still made me dream about putting my feet on the moon's surface someday.

He will be missed.

And my phone! It's almost a funny story. Basically the thing has a hard time with certain updates - mostly the necessary system update kind. Last time it decided to spontaneously reboot between the hours of 3 and 5 in the morning, and would inevitably shout DROID at the top of its wee little lungs until I got tired of hearing it reboot and turned it off.

Now it's doing the reboot thing again. Only this time, it's freezing with its little red Droid eye looking out at the world. I cannot turn it off. No amount of button mashing makes it respond. I can only stare at that cold, red eye.

(And hope it doesn't come to slaughter me in my sleep.)

I will not be able to see the Perseids tonight (BECAUSE IT IS CLOUDY) and this makes me sad. Next year, I swear, I am taking the day after the Perseids peak off from work and then I am driving to the middle of nowhere (won't take much where I live, ahahahahaha) and watching them.

I'll drive as far as I have to if it's cloudy.

I suppose there will always be time-lapse photos set to awesome music to look forward to?

BECAUSE THIS IS MY AVENGERS POST!

...er, MY QUASI-AVENGERS POST.

I say quasi because I am A) am not actually going to say anything about the movie in my post and B) WILL BE SCREENING COMMENTS, so if you have seen the movie say so and we can squee!

I figure this is the best way to both say my piece about the movie and keep spoilers away from everyone else. :D I was lucky enough to go in almost entirely spoiler-free, and I'd like to make sure I don't ruin anything for anyone else.

So I picked up Silent Hill Downpour over the weekend.

I am currently stuck somewhere between help, help, I cannot stop and oh no, no, turn it off, I CANNOT, EFF MEEEEEE. I almost want to be done with the game already so I can play it again, but man this first-time experience is fantastic.

cut for spoilersCollapse )

Sorry for the rather incoherent ramble. I have a lot of feels and it's hard to get them into words, especially given how quickly this game takes me from "oh, that's cool!" to "OH NO NOT OKAY FRAK, NO, FFHISDHF;SDI"

As if to celebrate my victory in writing, my AIM decided to cut out and kick me off. IT COULD NOT HANDLE THE SHEER FORCE OF MY WIN.

Sorry, [profile] cannedcoelcanth and [personal profile] take_the_good - I swear I didn't walk off on purpose. Now AIM won't let me back on. ;_;

OTOH, hey, I got stuff done today! Ish. Nothing incredibly important, just incredibly victorious and now I think I am going to drag my aching head to bed. Perhaps I will be even MORE productive tomorrow!

I have kind of a strange request.

What kinds of fun, healthy (or unhealthy) foods did you all eat as kids? I'm talking stuff like s'mores, ants on a log - stuff like that. "Interactive" foodstuffs?

I'm trying to brainstorm some of these things for a project at work (lol the things I get to do with my degree) and I didn't eat too many of those kinds of fun foods as a kid, so I'm having worlds of issues thinking of them and Google only takes me so far.

ETA: In my Google-searchings for stuff, I found this.

"This" is a giant slushie made from ice pops. You know. The ones that come in those little plastic tubes that cut your mouth but that you loved as a kid?

BRB BUYING ALL THE ICE POPS.

I WIN, YOU LOUSY STORY, I WIN. ME. YES.

Behold, almost every celebratory gif I have in my collection:

Aaand now onto chapter 6!

[profile] cannedcoelcanth, would you be willing to beta this one for me, too? Same fic as the first four chapters you looked over. I'd be forever in your debt.
